Golden Gate Fields commenced its inaugural meet on February 1, 1941. The 1950 Golden Gate Handicap concluded the most remarkable rivalry in racing history between Noor and Citation, a race that prompted Citation's rider, Steve Brooks, to proclaim, "We just can't beat that horse!"
Located just west of Berkeley, Golden Gate features live racing from November to March and June through August each year, and simulcast all year. The track is home to several major races, including the San Francisco Breeders Cup Mile and the Golden Gate Handicap.
